Pre-school Children

Healthy Eating Policy

At Little Owls Pre-School/Nursery we actively encourage children and parent/carers to participate in our healthy eating policy.

We are committed to providing healthy and nutritious, tasty food and drinks for all children. We always practice a policy, wherein all children's dietary needs are catered for and we are sensitive to the dietary requirement for all cultural, religious and individual preferences.

Little Owls is registered with North Lincs to provide food. Staff who handle or prepare food have up to date Food Handling Certificates and are fully trained in food storage, preparation, and food safety. Staff follow the Hygiene procedures laid out in our Health & Safety Policy when preparing food and drink.

Children help participate in menu planning and are given guidance to make healthy choices. We encourage children to become actively involved in the choosing, preparing and serving of snacks. All staff will be careful to ensure the safety of children and themselves when using sharp or dangerous equipment in food and drink preparation.

Parents/carers complete a confidential form, which includes information about any special dietary requirements or allergies the child/children suffer along with any preferences, this information is shared with manager and staff to safeguard their health and meet as far as possible their preferences. The special dietary requirements/allergies form is made available to all so all staff who are preparing food have up to date information on any sufferers.

No child will be forced to eat or drink something against their will and the withholding of food and drink will never be used as either a punishment or reward.

Healthy Eating

At Little Owls we recognise the importance of healthy eating and a balanced and nutritious diet, which is why we endeavour to make a variety of foods available giving vegetarian/vegan options with plenty of low fat and low sugar foods and fresh fruit. Brown and white bread will be available depending on child's preferences, milk and fresh drinking water which is available at all times.

Cultural and Religious Diversity

Little Owls and its staff are committed to embracing the religious and cultural diversity of families who use our pre-school and we will work with the parents/carers to ensure that any dietary requirements are met at all times. It is our policy to introduce children to different cultural and religious festivals and events through different types of food and drink and discuss event with the children as well as foods so children have a wide knowledge of foods and tastes.
